Oriental poppies have incredibly big, dramatic flowers. Large and stately, their colors have depth and intensity. 'Allegro' is a bright orangey scarlet with black eyes. Somewhat more compact than most orientals at only 12-18 inches.

Another excellent Walter's Garden introduction. True red blossoms with fringed petals stand like torches in early summer gardens. The blossoms are 4-6 inches across so it won't take too many of these to make a huge statement. The velvety-black seed capsules at the center of the poppy are surrounded by prominent dark purple stamens. No one will walk by this one without a comment. They do go dormant so plan on planting companions to fill the hole such as lilies or Astilbe or salvias for later blooms.

Luscious pink blossoms with deeply fringed, ruffled petals shoot up from wiry, pubescent stems in early summer. The crepe-like appearance and the satiny texture plus the size, 4-6 inches across, makes this beauty an outstanding focal point. The center of the poppy flower finishes this outstanding plant with very large, velvety-black seed capsules surrounded by prominent, dark purple stamens. Remember though, you'll need to plant a companion nearby as these flowers do go dormant after blooming. Look for a later bloomer such as lilies, Astilbe, or Campanula 'LaBelle' for that purpose.

Advertised as a perennial, I'm not sure about this, but I do know they self-seed quite nicely. I usually end up moving some of the seedlings around in the gardens. I don't know of any other flower this wonderful color.
