Monarda 'Grape Gumball' (Bee Balm)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

This brand new series of SUGAR BUZZ Monardas is perfectly suited to the middle of the flower border. In midsummer, 'Grape Gumball' forms a solid dome of vibrant magenta, 2-2.5 flowers on strong, well-branched stems. The dark green foliage forms an upright clump that will fill out containers nicely but wont run all over the garden. It displays above average resistance to powdery mildew.

Monarda is native to eastern North America, so it is easy to grow and it multiplies quickly. The flowers' sweet nectar attracts scores of hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to the garden. The aromatic foliage smells like mint when crushed and is often used to flavor teas.

Papaver orientale 'Beauty of Livermere' (Oriental Poppy)

Thumbnail Photo

Grow your oriental poppies in really sharp drainage or they will die out over winter. The foliage will go dormant after blooming so combine with other perennials such as ornamental grasses, achillea, or filipendula to cover the dormancy. Even with all these concerns, oriental poppies really deserve a place in your gardens. The huge, dinner plate size of these rich, dark, fire engine red flowers with their course, hairy foliage just can't be beat.

Sedum 'Firecracker' SUNSPARKLER Series ()

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

For a rich blanket of color in those hot, sunny areas, try Sedum Firecracker from breeder Chris Hansen who also brought us Dazzleberry and Lime Zinger. This is Chris improvement over his previous red-foliage introduction, Cherry Tart. You will be amazed by the foliage bud count on each dormant plug; it is a very dense growing, well-branched selection that wont split open in summer. It puts on a strong show of burgundy red color all season long, with only the tiniest new leaves emerging mint green. Plant Firecracker en masse in the landscape as a colorful, weed-suppressing ground cover and enjoy its vibrant pink flowers in late summer to early fall as an added bonus.
