Alaska Hardy Vines
Fritz Creek Gardens is pleased to offer a growing selection of vines, ideal for many garden situations. On this page you'll find our list of vines, including hardy kiwi, American bittersweet, clematis and honeysuckle.
You will love our Clematis selections! Clematis, the queen of climbing vines, can be grown over various supports including fences, walls, pergolas, arches, other plants, roses, trellis, etc. Clematis are easy to plant: Dig a hole 18 inches wide and deep, amend the soil with compost or manure and plant the vine about three inches deeper than in the current pot. Be sure to renew manure or compost annually. The books all say Clematis roots like to be cool. With our weather conditions and historically cold soils in Alaska, this is usually not a concern.
Pruning is based on whether the variety blooms on old or new wood. Old wood plants should not be pruned except for shape, or for dead or diseased wood. New wood-blooming plants should be lightly pruned in late winter or early spring, removing dead or weak stems and shaping.
Moose will eat the vines. Zoning isn't proven but our varieties are at least hardy to zone 4. Some are hardy to zone 2. We are still experimenting. When we have particular experience will list it for your information.

Back by your requests, this wonderful very distinct shaped pure white bloomer often sports bronze-tinged leaves in the spring. An early bloomer in our gardens, we grow this one on our big trellis/arch with our Alaska Hardy roses. Tons of smaller white flowers that usually bloom twice with the second bloom period a bit more reserved. Zone: 3 Pruning Guide: Early blooming so dead and weak stems should be pruned in late winter or very early spring. A brand new yellow selection from the Netherlands, we're pretty excited to see this one. The petals are more waxy than C. tangutica and the stamens are purple -- yeah. It has the same wonderful grey-white seed heads as we are so pleased to see each fall and throughout the winter. If this Clematis turns out to be as hardy as our C. tangutica, we'll be very pleased. Zone: 3 Pruning Guide: The usual caveat such as cool roots and prune hard in spring are listed with the plant instructions. Known as Sweet Autumn Clematis, this one sports extremely fragrant and floriferous creamy white flowers that bloom later in the season but for a much longer period than many Clematis, usually two months. Another plus is it will bloom in part shade, although we have ours in full sun. Zone: 3 Pruning Guide: This Clematis does require some pruning or you will get a long bare stem before foliage and blooms. However, if you prune it hard, you will lose that year's flowers. We recommend pruning about 1/3 of the plant each year. You'll need to take a little more time with this one to keep it in good shape but it's worth it. Price: One Gallon: $15.00 |
