New Perennials for 2008: A-H

Our new perennial plants lineup for 2008 is extreme. I stopped counting at 84 new varieties and that doesn't include new Primula, Lilium, vines or Iris. Traveling to the Northern Scandinavian countries and into Russia in fall 2007, I couldn't seem to control myself. You'd think after 11 years I'd get a little accustomed to seeing new plants without having a burning desire -- NOT! I am, however, trying to move to more unusual perennials and less of the easily obtained varieties. I hope you have an opportunity to stop by the greenhouse and see some of these truly great plants. Sorry if we are sold out before you get here. Unfortunately, many of the newer varieties are available only in limited quantities.

This is Page 1 of two pages that feature new outstanding perennials that Fritz Creek Gardens is growing and selling for the 2008 season. Page 2 features plants from I-P.

Agastache 'Blue Fortune'

A hybrid of A. rugosa and A. foeniculum. In the past I thought Agastache was too tender for us, but after seeing it in Estonia I was encouraged. The grower there said it had survived minus 20 F without snow. It's a long bloomer, starting midsummer.

Arabis 'Little Treasure'

Arabis 'Little Treasure'

We love the white Arabis and now we have 'Little Treasure' with its uniform blooms of vibrant rose pink brightening any perennial border. Excellent ground cover for dry areas, slopes or sunny areas.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun

Height: 4-6 inches

Price: $6.00

Codonopsis

I'm not sure where I got this plant and I wish I knew which species it is as the pictures that match, Clematidia, say zone 6. I've grown this one in our gardens for three years in the worst of conditions so I've saved a few seeds and hopefully can say "yes" the next time you see it in the gardens and want one.

Zone: 3 (from experience)

Location: Sun

Height: 18 inches

Price: $6.00

Cornus canadensis (Dwarf Dogwood, Bunchberry)

Cornus canadensis

I've been trying to get this native plant for years. Imagine my delight when this past year at our Caribou Lake cabin, the ground was literally blanketed in these wondrous woodland flowers. Although technically a shrub, they are only about four inches tall. The reddish or orange berries appear late August or September, thus the common name "bunchberry," probably not the best to eat. The white bracts are often mistaken for the flower, however the flower is really the small clusters on top of the bracts. If you can plant these in good woodland soil, or bring in that type setting, you'll enjoy nice spreading by stolonifera roots.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun to edge of Woodland

Height: 4-8 inches

Price: $8.25

Delphinium elatum 'Blue Lace'

From the New Millennium Hybrids, sturdy stems (probably no staking required), gorgeous leaves that are deeply divided show off the true sky blue flowers with just a touch of lavender pink. Good choice for bouquets.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun, Partial Sun/Shade

Height: 5-6 feet

Price: $8.25

Dicentra 'King of Hearts' (Bleeding Heart)

Dicentra 'King of Hearts'

I've had this one before but I really didn't appreciate it like I should. When I saw it in Sweden in late August, planted as a specimen, alone, it was totally awesome. The flowers extend beyond the foliage and bloom all season right into the fall. This very vigorous cultivar has unstoppable blooms first appearing bright red, then becoming paler as they mature.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun, Partial Sun/Shade

Height: 8-10 inches

Price: $9.25

Eryngium planum 'Blue Glitter' (Sea Holly)

Eryngium 'Blue Glitter'

In our gardens, we have Eryngium planted in a very out-of-the way place yet it gets seen and raved about time and again. It looks like it would be difficult to grow but it definitely is not. It's terrific for drying, too. 'Blue Glitter' has a shorter crop time than others, a much higher yield of smaller flowers and brighter, shimmering blue color in an unusual height. We also are offering the "regular" Eryngium 'Sapphire Blue' with a height of 24-30 inches.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun

Height: 6-8 inches

Price: $9.25

Filipendula 'Kahome'

Filipendula 'Kahome'

I love Filipendula. Short, medium or tall, early or late, I've got them all in my gardens and very happy with each and everyone. 'Kahome' is the shorter and maybe a bit later variety. However, its display is magnificent and blooms forever. Leave a bit of room for this one as after a few years one plant will be about 15 inches tall and 30 inches across. We do have three other varieties ranging in height up to 6 feet (maybe more) and in pinks and whites.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun

Height: 12-15 inches

Price: $9.25

Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer' (Sneezeweed)

Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer'

Click for larger view

An undeserved nickname as it really doesn't make you sneeze. Although it is very hardy, sometimes it forgets to get ready for winter. The best thing to do is cut it down to the ground around the middle of September. One of the most colorful flowers we have. Deep red flowers are streaked with orange and yellow with the brown cone the finishing touch.

Zone: 3

Location: Sun

Height: 3 feet

Price: $8.25

Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic' (Day Lily)

Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic'

Sweet scented, soft, peachy pink tepals with yellow halo and green throat, this beauty has won many awards. The pie crust edges frame the diamond dusted double blossoms. Early bloomer exhibits prolific and extended blooms (16 hours).

Zone: 3

Location: Sun

Height: 26 inches

Price: $12.00

Hosta

Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears'

Once again hosta was in the Top 20 Sellers for 2007. As a result, we will be offering 24 varieties for the 2008 season. From the petite eight-inch tall 'Blue Mouse Ears' (picture), named the 2008 American Hosta Growers Hosta of the Year, to the gigantic brilliant gold leaved 'August Moon' and from solid green foliage to marbled, striped, gold or cream or white margins, we've got a remarkable lineup for the 2008 season.

Zone: 3

Location: Full sun to part Shade

Height: 8 inches to 24 inches

Price: Prices range from $9.25 to $35 depending on maturity, rarity and size
