L.A. Hybrid Lilies

The L.A. Hybrids are a cross between Lilium longiflorum and the Asiatic hybrid types. The purpose of the cross is to increase the intensity and depth of the colors, provide a stronger stem, increase the color options, and usually keep the fragrant factor. They are still pretty new so not so easy to find, but we like them a lot and are trying to increase our inventory every year.

Mark White of Sterling introduced me to this one. It is so sweet with its lightest cream petals dotted with dainty rust freckles. The rust stamens really complete the package. I have this one planted with bright purple Polemonium 'Bressingham Purple' but I think I'll try it this year with something a little more mellow or blendy (isn't that a word?), maybe Alchemilla mollis that I love for the chartreuse baby's breath blooms.

One of my absolute all-time favorites. I'd love to have a dress this color, or maybe a bedroom, or maybe about 100 plants in my gardens. Soft, glowing pink looks good enough to eat.

Height: 32-36 inches

Shiny, wine-red upward-facing blooms have somewhat pointed petals with almost black big spots towards the very dark throat adding depth of color. Quite the intense color. I think it would look stupendous with the tall grass 'Overdam' -- WOW -- or nestled in the soft pink cotton candy blossoms of Filipendula 'Venusta.'

Height: 40 inches

Price: $10.00

Very, very new. Extremely dark brush marks in the center fade out to a mellow yellow. Regally tall with side facing blooms. A monochromatic combo suggestion might be Achillea 'Terra Cotta' or for something with a bit more wow, try Polemonium 'Bressingham Purple,' with its dark foliage and nice blue flowers, or Agastache 'Blue Fortune.'

Zone: 3

Height: 52 to 56 inches

Price: $10.00

Lilium 'Cevernnes'

Pure, intense golden-yellow without spots makes a striking statement in groups without companions. However, if you want a nice combination, try Lysimachia 'Golden Alexander' and perhaps a nice Iris, such as our old standby 'Caesar's Brother' or one of the newer sibirica iris for a terrific display. (Note: 'Cevernnes' also found spelled 'Cevennes.')

Lilium 'Courier'

A really, really white bloom with an almost green throat. Of course white goes with anything so the sky's the limit for combinations. I think any of the Astrantia would be great with their totally different blooms and foliage.

Plum-colored petals and darker stamens grab your eye wherever they bloom in your gardens. So many other perennials are complimented by this great lily. Dicentra eximia 'Luxuriant' blooms all summer and although the foliage and flowers are opposite the lily, they make a great combination. (Photo courtesy of Dr. Annie Nevaldine.)

Lilium 'Golden Tycoon'

A very nice clear yellow lily. Strong stems and large flowers make this plant great for windy areas or places animals might disturb.

Height: 48-52 inches

Lilium 'Red Alert'

Earlier bloom time (early summer), good fragrance and outfacing blooms. A great dark red flower that has strong stems and is disease and virus resistant. Combination suggestion, Filipendula (white) 'Flore Pleno.'

Would you call this mauve? Or maybe it's a nice shiny dark pink? Anyway you call it, I think it's a superb color, and I'm hoping it will bloom at the same time as one of my Digitalis that is similar.

Zone: 3

Height: 24-30 inches

Price: $10.00

Lilium 'Royal Sunset'

I don't know about the "royal" part, but it definitely looks like some Alaskan sunsets I've seen. Can you picture several of these planted together with a couple of other lilies such as orange 'Brunello' and maybe a nice clear yellow like 'Bestseller' and a few Achillea 'Terra Cotta' weaving through the mixture?

Lilium 'Salmon Classic'

The soft salmon color on this one was my first experience combining with Achillea. I fell in love with this combination that year and have expanded to every color combination you could imagine.

Lilium 'Springfield'

Another lily that the color is hard to describe but I'm sticking to my nice clear yellow theory. It's a full petal bloom with just a hint of rust freckles and looks dazzling with our new Helenium 'Sahin's Early Flowerer.'

Height: 44 inches

Price: $10.00

Lilium 'Strassburg'

Very tall regal lily is described by some as a medium clear pink and others as a soft salmon. Hmmm. Mine is definitely soft pink. I do know for sure the flowers are a tad cupped with freckles that fade into the almost white throat giving it a bit of a fragile appearance. I also know it looks fantastic with Achillea 'Terra Cotta' or Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic,' with its peachy-pink tepals. (See in our 2008 New Perennials page for more.)

Height: 56 inches

Price: $10.00

If you're looking for orange, look no farther. Orange, yellow, orange, orange. That's the way I see these narrow-leafed lily petals. Starting off with a nice orange on the tips, fading to yellow then back to darker orange and bright orange-rust stamens you've definitely got your orange fix. Want more orange, combine with Primula florindae copper.
