Alaska Hardy® Garden Lilies
Lilies have been around forever and there is a good reason. They are superb plants, faithful, produce for many years, multiply with good manners and offer a myriad of colors, sizes and forms. We offer mainly two types, Asiatic Hybrids (featured below) and the L.A. Hybrids, which are on Page 2.
L.A. Hybrid Lilies: Click here to see Page 2 of our 2008 lily selections, the L.A. Hybrids. These are a cross between Lilium longiflorum and the Asiatic hybrids. The purpose of the cross is to increase the intensity and depth of the colors, provide a stronger stem, increase the color options, and usually keep the fragrant factor.
Lilies are bulbs that need to be planted no less than six inches deep, in well-drained soils, and in a place where they won't be disturbed for years. Compost, bulb food or bone meal can be added to the soil when planting and a top coating of compost or composted steer manure can be added every spring but not absolutely necessary. If you are bothered by varmints, a few pieces of sharp gravel in the hole will deter voles. This is one plant that I do cut back in the fall after the foliage turns brown to feet the bulbs.
We sell our lilies in one gallon pots for $9.25 (the special lilies cost more). There are usually three lilies per pot and all our lilies are hardy to at least Zone 3.
With 23 Asiatics, 15 L.A. Hybrids, a Double Tigrinium and one Martagon variety in our lineup this year, I'm sure there is a lily just right for your garden. On this page you'll find those two special lilies and our complete list of Asiatic Hybrid lilies.

I saw this one in Copenhagen at a nursery in its display gardens. I almost didn't identify it as a lily. John Vandenberg of Vandenberg Perennials and Bulbs was on the trip too and assured me it indeed was a double tiger lily and even more exciting, he had a special connection that would allow him access to the bulbs. Needless to say I put my order in on the spot. What do you think? Is it really a lily?

Not readily available on the open market, we're very pleased to have found a reasonably priced source for this one. A Turkscap lily with up to 40 small bespeckled flowers on four- to six-foot stems. The smaller flowers make this one easier to incorporate into the landscape than the larger lilies. Take a bit of extra care for this one making sure you have good drainage and rich soils. Patience please. Sometimes takes a season or two to become established.

Stamen free, double-blooming soft pink that will bloom continuously if faded flowers are removed. Blooms last three or four weeks. Great for bouquets. Unusual. Try combining with Filipendula 'Venustra' for a lovely, blowsy display.

A true dark red with an even darker red center makes this lily a good choice for patriotic gardens. Combined with lighter colored perennials such as Filipendula 'Flore Pleno' or nestled in with sibirica iris, or for a truly striking exhibit, plant amid the tall, yellow Primula florindae.

Lilium 'Brunello'

Orange is in and this one is a true orange and one of the best oranges. Butterflies find this one quickly. Exotic look makes for a good cut flower choice. Brunello multiplies very nicely, indicating excellent potential for naturalizing.

Lilium 'Centerfold'

Eye-catching white with dark burgundy refined stripes from the center of the flower. Outstanding, strong stemmed performer that blends well with most other plants. Two other lilies, L.A. Hybrid 'Royal Sunset' and 'California' combined with 'Centerfold' would definitely make a lily statement.

Height: 35-45 inches

Lilium 'Corrida'

A nice bi-color. Darker pink on the outer parts of the petals with nice warm yellow centers create a totally unique look. Although you'll find this one in the pink section, from a distance the yellow would be most prevalent in my opinion. Looks great combined with some of the multi colored Achillea.

Lilium 'Elodie'

Whew, isn't this one a beauty? Double-flowered, medium-pink blooms on nice sturdy stalks. Wouldn't this one look great with the dark blue of Aconitum (monk's hood) or maybe the new Salvia 'Rhapsody in Blue.'

Lilium 'Gran Cru'

Very decorative clear yellow with distinct mahogany brush marks gets lots of attention in our gardens. Combine with Angelica gigas (60 inches) with its deep mahogany-red balls and creamy yellow or maybe the copper Primula florindae (30 inches) for a showy vignette.

Lilium 'Kansas'

Warm, creamy yellow starts at the center and floods out into the white outer edges of the petals. A nice mellow lily that can blend in with other creamy yellow plants such as yellow Aquilegia (columbine) or combine it with a bright purple such as Eryngium 'Sapphire Blue' or the Agastache 'Blue Fortune' for a little more drama.

Height: 30 inches

Lilium 'Landini'

Mysterious looking with their deep, dark purple petals, these brilliant lilies really stand out in the gardens with light or white companions such as Achillea 'Stephanie Cohen' or Monarda 'Beauty of Cobham.'

Unique colored lily with greenish-yellow petals and bronze-red centers. Very hardy and attracts hummingbirds. Blooms early summer. Achieve a unique effect by combining this lily with the chartreuse (baby breath look) blooms of Alchemilla mollis.

Lilium 'Lolly Pop'

An old one but still one of the most favorites of all lily growers. Becky of Brent and Becky's bulbs describes it just perfect: "Dusky rose brush marks decorate half of each whipped cream petal." Becky and I agree that it looks great with a white or pink Achillea.

Lilium 'Loreto'

This guy has the blackest brush marks I've seen yet. The orange is sort of mellow but the black makes it look rather stark. I think I'll try this one with a totally different color and texture, maybe Polemonium 'Brise d' Anjou' with its soft blue flowers and variegated foliage or perhaps the new Salvia 'Rhapsody in Blue.'

Lilium 'Monte Negro'

Very, very dark red petals with black spots. Blends well with almost any color in the perennial gardens. This one grows 60 inches in my gardens! Books say 38 inches.

What a rich statement with a bright yellow color without spots and side facing blooms similar to 'Gironde' but with a little more intense color. For a pizzazz look, try it with Asclepias tuberosa 'Dream' (also a brand new plant) or for a more relaxed or mellow look consider nestling the bulbs in a mature Alchemilla mollis.

Lilium 'Renoir'

Exotically beautiful, upward-facing soft pink flowers are very romantic for cut flowers and for perennial borders. Achillea Summerwine is a perfect companion plant, not just because of the soft wine color, but also because the bloom and foliage are completely different than the lily for a nice show.

Lilium 'Sphinx'

You might be confused about this lily as it is a true double and you either like it or you don't. The color, on the other hand, is a very nice warm orange double. It's hard to find this orange. Iris 'Ruffled Velvet' would result in a stark display or perhaps the copper Primula florindae for a more mellow appearance.

Lilium 'Sugar Jewel'

I'd call this one a tricolor lily. Quite unusual. The petals start out at the outer edges a nice light pink then fade to white and then -- pow -- a very dark, dark blood red center. Pretty spectacular. I've never seen this one before and am anxious to plant a three- or four-foot display in our own gardens. The pink tinged tall grass 'Overdam' might be just the combination plant.

Lilium 'Vermeer'

Delicate, soft pink with a white center, this lily is soooo sweet. Combine with Achillea 'Apple Blossom' or the willowy, graceful grass Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Overdam.'

Height: 44-48 inches
Price: $10.00 |
Lilium 'Vivaldi'

The soft rose pink bloom is so perfect, it almost looks unreal. Extra-long, early-summer bloom time corresponds with Lamium and Filipendula 'Kahome' or the tall Filipendula 'Venustra.'

Lilium 'Wizard'

This one lives up to its name. Dark yellow with red-black spots does appear pretty bazaar or wizardly-like. Combination suggestion: Angelica gigas or Monarda 'Jacob Cline.' Note: This lily is so new we do not yet know how tall it will grow.
