Alaska Hardy® Plants for 2008

Dicentra 'King of Hearts'

At Fritz Creek Gardens we specialize in cold-hardy plants for Alaskan gardens and other like areas of the United States. Our plant selection includes perennials, vines, roses, shrubs and trees. Our goal is to offer you the largest selection of hardy herbaceous perennials suitable for the great north and cold-hardy regions, and to provide our expertise so you can succeed in growing healthy, beautiful plants with the least amount of negative impact on our environment.

Select Perennials

That's why we are proud to develop our own line of Alaska Hardy® Perennials -- your assurance these star performers are locally grown, high quality, cold hardy and demanding enough for Alaskans. To introduce these plants, we've singled out a handful of these top perennials we think demand a place in your garden. Explore 7 pages of color photos, descriptions, planting locations and hardiness zone ratings. The plants are alphabetical by botanical name, but you can use the common name (or botanical name) pull-down menu below to jump directly to that plant.

New Plants! New Plants!

Every year hundreds of new plants are introduced to gardeners around the world. Fritz Creek Gardens is proud to add a number of these new varieties for 2008 and in general expand our line of cold-hardy plants, in addition to the tried-and-true perennials listed above in our Select Perennials pages. We put a lot of work into researching, experimenting, visiting gardens all over the world, attending seminars and visiting with the leaders in the industry to select the best plants suitable for northern gardens and other cold-hardy areas. So, check out our New Perennials for 2008 pages and see why we can't wait until spring and summer. Pictured above is one we're quite excited about, Dicentra 'King of Hearts.' Now accepting early orders.

Garden Lilies

Lilies have been around forever and there are many good reasons why they deserve a spot in your garden. For 2008 we have expanded our lily selections to offer 23 Asiatic hybrids, 15 L.A. hybrids, a Double Tigrinium and one Martagon variety. Be sure to check out our Garden Lilies Page for more. And don't forget to order early!

Primula Specialists

Primula 'Lismore Jewel' With more than 600 varieties divided into 23 sections and probably 250 that are good for Alaska gardens, there has to be at least one Primula -- or 10 -- perfect for a spot in your garden. What other genera can boast so many varieties that are great in so many different conditions? They usually are completely disease and pest free. Some love wet areas, some are great in rock gardens, while some bloom in early spring and others late into fall. And for sizes, the sky is the limit -- from tiny two-inch ones to the taller candelabra types. Take a look at our Primula Pages. Fritz Creek Gardens is proud to offer so many different Primula for 2008. Be sure to order early; many are in short supply and are expected to sell out very fast once the season begins. Of course, you can always place your orders early for these or any other plants. Call or write to us for more.

Garden Roses

'Persian Yellow'

Over the past few years since we introduced cold-hardy roses, our sales and selections have exploded. There's nothing like success and that is exactly what has happened to our Alaska Hardy® Zone 2 and 3 rose selections. Fritz Creek Gardens now sells more than 50 rose varieties! Take a look at these outstanding varieties from our 2007 plant list, in full color with descriptions, on our Garden Roses pages. Our 2008 list will be published here soon!

Hardy Vines

Fritz Creek Gardens is pleased to offer a growing selection of vines, ideal for many garden situations. We grow hardy kiwi, American bittersweet, many outstanding varieties of clematis and more. Click here to jump to our Vines page. Note: we will be updating our Vines pages for 2008 shortly.

Shrubs and Trees

For the 2008 season, we will be posting our shrub and tree list. The most recent trend to design shrubs into our perennial beds has presented Fritz Creek Gardens with a challenge. Tarri and I have traveled extensively to search out sources and spent 11 years now trialing different varieties. We are very pleased to offer a great line-up of beautiful shrubs for 2007. They are featured in our 2007 Plant List and Catalog, which you can order for only $2. Of course, we are always available to assist you in planting instructions.

The loss of our mature native spruce over the past 10 years has presented us with the ultimate test. We look at our loss as an opportunity. As a direct result, we've ventured into new territory and are experiencing good success with varieties seldom, if ever, grown here. We've worked hard to locate larger, more mature trees for instant gratification at reasonable prices. I hope all of our efforts will assist you in making decisions.
