New Plants for 2010

As usual, we seem to have gone overboard for 2010, with more than 100 new plants. But just take a look at these beauties and you'll see why we can't help it. By "new" we mean some are brand new to the market, some are new to us, and some are ones we've had a hard time getting recently. Download our order form and be sure to order early, as some will sell out quickly.

Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire' (Spurge)

Something for all seasons. Start off with the deep purple, red and orange foliage in early spring, then comes the sulphur yellow brachts then back to dark reds in the fall. Oh yes, did I forget the chartreuse foliage just behind the brachts? How many colors are legal on one plant? Phenomenal with daffodils in the spring and what about that crazy Echinacea 'Coconut Lime' to really be outrageous. Moose resistant.

Galium odoratum (Sweet Woodruff)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

Not to be confused with our native Galium boreale (bedstraw), Galium odoratum (Asperula) is a wonderful ground cover with glossy fan-shaped green foliage. The dainty, star-shaped white flowers are sweetly scented. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Will take partial shade or full sun. Will dry and retain the sweet hay fragrance. A great partner to our native Mertensia virginica (Virginia Bluebells).

Grow at the edge of your woodlands, around your benches, anywhere to enjoy the nice soft perfume. Timing is right to hide bulb foliage. Don't let this one dry out. Foliage will sulk.

Geranium 'Elke' (Cranesbill Geranium)

Thumbnail Photo

A very, very long blooming ground cover geranium. Starting in early summer with silver-dollar sized florescent pink flowers you'll get real familiar with her as she will still be blooming come fall. The pink blooms are air brushed with edges of white. Another good one for that red fall color. I love geranium with broad-leaved hosta. Moose resistant.

Geranium 'Jolly Bee' (Cranesbill Geranium)

No Photo Available

A Proven Winners selection. Large lavender blue flowers appear all season into fall. Proven Winners claims this geranium is superior to 'Rozanne', and that's a huge statement. The reasoning is superior mounding performance. Attracts butterflies, deadheading not necessary, moose resistant, low maintenance. Sounds like a winner to me.

Geranium phaeum (Mourning Widow Geranium)

The really dark maroon flower is where the common name mourning widow initiated. Probably the darkest of any geranium. Blooms prolifically in early summer and sporadically until fall. Very hardy. Combine with Astrantia 'Abbey Road'.

Geranium pratense 'Dark Reiter' (Cranesbill Geranium)

Thumbnail Photo

Very similar to 'Midnight Reiter' except it is much more compact at only 10 inches. The fantastic reddish plum foliage is the same and the blue lilac blooms are similar. And it blooms all summer into fall just like the big guy. Combine with the neon chartreuse grass Alopecurus pratensis Aureovariegatus. Moose resistant.

Geranium sanguineum 'New Hampshire Purple' (Cranesbill Geranium)

A nice cupped rose purple blossom framed with dark green foliage. Looks great trailing over rocks or a wall. Dead heading will keep those blooms coming into the fall. Combine with broad-leaved hosta.

Geranium sanguineum 'Tiny Monster' (Dwarf Bloody Cranesbill)

Excellent rock garden plant with its quickly spreading habit and foliage that remains attractive all season. Flowers appear 4-6 inches above the tidy mound of foliage. A low-maintenance perennial. One of my favorites. Combine with Caltha multiplex (marsh marigold).

Geranium sanguineum var. striatum (Dwarf Bloody Cranesbill)

Thumbnail Photo

Yes, it is a relative of the other entire "regular" geranium but this one goes way beyond the typical bloom. The flowers are larger, and the expected magenta bloom has been replaced with a light pink bloom with thin elegant lines in red in each petal. A real beauty and remember, it is moose resistant and slug resistant.

Geranium x magnificum (Cranesbill Geranium)

Thumbnail Photo

Named Geranium magnificum because of its huge 2-inch dark violet-blue blooms, twice the size of regular cranesbill. One of the most reliable of all geraniums, the soft, shaggy, deeply cut foliage turns red in fall and has a distinct fragrance. Combine with iris, hosta, or plant a few Ajuga at its feet.

Geum coccineum 'Borisii' (Avens)

Thumbnail Photo

Great in the mixed perennial garden or for the cut flower garden. Easy, well behaved, long blooming, showy bright orange flowers. Finding this color isn't easy but growing them is. The foliage is a bonus of kidney shaped; evergreen that stays nice all season. Combine with spiky Stachys 'Humello' or spring bulbs. The foliage from 'Borisii' will camouflage the dying bulb leaves.

Similar to our native but more floriferous and extremely hardy. Kidney-shaped foliage stays nice all season and provides a great contrast for the yellow flowers. Low maintenance perennial. Stems are well branched making it ideal for cut flowers. Combine with Papaver Icelandic for a happy garden.

Hemerocallis 'Spiritual Corridor' (Daylily)

Thumbnail Photo

When Walter's Gardens Inc. says this is one of its favorites, it means a lot, as they are one of the world's premier daylily producers. And that is exactly what they said! "Gorgeous lavender pink flowers have a prominent creamy yellow eye, matching picotee edge, and chartreuse throat. The broad petals open flat for best display. Lightly fragrant blossoms are produced atop well-branched, heavily budded scapes in early to midsummer." Gorgeous isn't it?

Hepatica americana (Liverleaf)

Thumbnail Photo

Magnify

The violet blue flowers are easily seen in early spring. The liver-shaped leaves led the early Chinese to use the roots to make a tea. The practice known as the doctrine of signatures refers to leaves or flowers that are shaped like human organs, in this case the liver. However, do not do this. It is thought this plant is slightly toxic.

Hosta 'Great Expectations' (Hosta)

Be patient. This hosta is a slow grower but it will live up to its name. Thick puckered, broadly ovate leaves are slug resistant. Wide, irregular, blue-green margins surround an ever-changing center. The foliage transforms from chartreuse, to yellow then to creamy yellow and finally to white depending on how much sun it gets. Spread is 40 inches. Flower scape is 24 inches.

Hosta 'Krossa Regal' (Hosta)

Beautiful unusual vase-shaped hosta. The frosty blue-green leaves are thick discouraging slugs. Exceptionally tall 4-6 foot scapes in mid- to late-summer support lavender fragrant flowers. Attracts songbirds and hummingbirds. Long summers may produce an orange-yellow fall color. Spread is 3-6 feet.

Hosta 'Lakeside Shore Master' (Hosta)

Very vigorous, blue-green leaves emerge in spring then develop rich creamy yellow centers. Some seer suckering at maturity usually deters slugs. Pale lavender, funnel-shaped flowers on 30-inch scapes are followed by dark green seed pods. Spread is 36 inches.
