Fritz Creek Gardens To Host Noted Horticulturist

Stephanie Cohen

Fritz Creek Gardens is pleased to host Stephanie Cohen -- a writer, lecturer, teacher, gardener and a good friend -- this Sunday (July 29) from 3-6 p.m.

So mark your calendars now and come out to Fritz Creek Gardens on July 29 to meet Stephanie. She will spend time in the gardens and the nursery from 3-6 p.m., so here's an opportunity to ask her questions about plants and garden design. She also will be signing copies of her book, "The Perennial Gardener's Design Primer," which she co-authored with Nancy Ondra. We'll have a limited number of copies available for sale at $24.95 each. The book was published in January 2005 by Storey Press and was its top-selling garden book that year.

Stephanie is known by many names throughout the horticultural world -- the "Vertically Challenged Gardener," the "Dr. Root of Perennials" and the "Perennial Diva." She has taught herbaceous plants and perennial design at Temple University for more than 20 years. She is the former director of the Landscape Arboretum at Temple University, Ambler. Stephanie is a contributing editor for "Fine Gardening" and The HGTV Newsletter. She has won numerous awards, including the Award of Merit from the Perennial Plant Association in 2006. This prestigious award is given to individuals who have contributed to the advancement of the perennial industry through growing, retailing, teaching or designing with perennials.

Stephanie also will lecture at the Homer Garden Club on Saturday, July 28 at 3 p.m. She will speak on "New Plants for Cold Climates." This lecture will take place at the Best Western Bidarki Inn, 575 Sterling Highway in Homer. This is one presentation you won't want to miss! Cost of the lecture is $15 each person at the door.

On Sunday, July 29, the Homer Garden Club also is hosting the "Biggest Garden Tour" in club history. Six gardens will be open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., including Fritz Creek Gardens. The cost of this tour is $5 for garden club members and $10 for non-members. You determine your own order of visits. Maps will be available at Stephanie's lecture and also again at City Hall between 10-11 a.m. on the 29th. Refreshments will be offered at two of the garden locations.
